In Bed With...Eden Summers

Welcome back to the boudoir. The sultry atmosphere is set for a cosy pillow chat with one of my favourite people and authors who has just released a new book and has a fab freebie on offer. Snuggle up because today we are in bed with Eden Summers, author of A Shot of Sin.
Are you comfy, Hun? I'll go easy on you, I promise. So tell us, what’s the hardest thing about writing a sexual relationship into a story?
Kate…what’s the hardest thing? *snicker* Sorry, I’m remove my mind from the gutter.

(K: Oh Lord! I forgot about your dirty mind - I'm surprised you're the first to pick that little gem up! Shall I rephrase that? What's the most difficult thing about writing a sexual relationship into a story?)

I actually find sex scenes the most difficult to write. It’s a delicate balance of love, lust, dialogue and body parts, that has to all come together in a beautiful dance. Whether it’s hot or sweet, I still feel the most pressure writing the physical scenes.

(K: Bit like a circus act isn't it? Balancing, twisting...you get the picture.)

When it comes to sex scenes in your work, how far are you willing to take your readers into the bedroom (or boardroom, or elevator...) and why?
All the way. For me, sex is an integral part a relationship. It doesn’t have to be kinky, aggressive, sweet, whatever. There isn’t a right or wrong way to have sex…unless what you’re doing is illegal. However, I do think a physical connection, no matter how big or small (and no, I’m not talking about actual body parts) is extremely important for a healthy connection.
I don’t want to short change the reader by leaving that out. You can also learn a lot about characters by the way they treat someone sexually.
And more obviously, it’s hot. *big grin*

(K: You're right, chemistry is the key - and that's not always easy to capture in words.)

Do you do any research to help with writing sex scenes? Tell us about it.
I need to have confidence in what I’m writing, so I like to have my facts straight. However, that in no way means I’ve engaged in the threesome I wrote in Blind Attraction, or spent time in sex clubs like a Shot of Sin…well, not all my time anyway ;)

(K: So she says...Maybe we should ask her firefighter hubby?)

I may ask my husband to act out a position (with clothes on) to make sure all body parts fit together, or another member can be inserted into the scene. But that’s about as far as it has gone so far.

(K: Told you we should ask her husband. Clothes on? Pffft)

Tell us about your first kiss – where did it happen and what was it like?
My first kiss was a drunken moment in time. It wasn’t sweet or romantic. I wanted to be a member of the cool kissing club all my friends had already joined, so I kissed a guy and blamed the mistake on alcohol.
Not classy at all.

(K: You and half the rest of the population. And you never know, he might've thought it was sweet and romantic.)

Have you ever had a lover who changed you or taught you something new about yourself, a lover who made a difference in your life?
Definitely. I’ve learned a lot about my body through the actions of my husband. I didn’t really know myself sexually until years after I punched my V-card. In fact, I’m still learning. I like to explore. I’m not opposed to trying new things.
I’ve also learned what pleasure means in a relationship. It’s a very important factor in my marriage and I hope it always will be.

(K: *Snort* Punched your V-card - that's a new one! Lucky you to have an adventurous hubby - complete with his own uniform too!)

WHO IS EDEN SUMMERS?
Eden Summers is a true blue Aussie, living in regional New South Wales with her two energetic young boys and a quick witted husband. In late 2010, Eden's romance obsession could no longer be sated by reading alone, so she decided to give voice to the sexy men and sassy women in her mind. She can't resist alpha dominance, dark features and sarcasm in her fictional heroes and loves a strong heroine who knows when to bite her tongue but also serves retribution with a feminine smile on her face.
