Like a stage show, much goes on behind the scenes when writing a book. (Panic. Then there's doubt, fear and more panic.) Jennifer Scoullar, my good friend and fellow Little Lonsdale Writers Group member, has tagged me in this fascinating blog chain where writers reveal their behind the scenes processes. Is it all smoke and mirrors?

My top reads for 2013, a year of reading Australian women writers and stretching my usual boundaries. If only someone can teach me to read faster!

Welcome to my milk bar. Remember strolling barefoot into the local milk bar as a kid with twenty cents in your hand, ready to make a selection of your favourite sweets. This week, instead of delivering you a pre-made dessert a la mode, I’m offering the blogging equivalent of a bag of mixed lollies.

It’s quirky, interesting, a little bit challenging and a whole lot of fun. Saucy is an inspired combination of erotic spoken word and unique plus-size burlesque. An event to whet many appetites.

Being an author isn't always about getting the words down, although that is the most important part. Once the words are down and out in the wild, people like to talk to you about them, particularly if the words in question are a bit controversial.

Apologies for my absence. I've been frantic the last couple of weeks with finishing a rough draft of my second novel and attending the annual Romance Writers of Australia conference in Fremantle Perth. I have returned to the desk after a fortnight feeling somewhat dazed and confused because during my week in the West I fell in love with so much - music, art, words, people - I think I'm suffering in-love-brain-fry.

I found this a tough and compelling read, and I'm still grappling with mixed feelings about it. Not Your Ordinary Housewife is a gruelling, and funny, and shocking, and, at its heart, a tragic love story. Nikki was once one of Australia's foremost porn queen's, loved and revered by thousands of men who wrote her intimate letters, swooned over her raunchy photos and videos, and masturbated endlessly to the fragrance of her used underwear.

Please allow me to step aside from the sexy stuff for a moment . . . I'm lucky. For a lot of reasons. Today I'm lucky because I'm holding a real, 3 dimensional copy of my soon-to-be-released book, The Yearning, in my hand. (Ebooks are all very well, but there is nothing to compare with the physical artifact). A book I was able to write because I'm literate, compliments of the Australian government school system.

What's a girl's blog without a little blatant self promotion? And what better reason to shout to the rooftops than the release of my first novel in ebook form. The Yearning hit iPad's, Kindles, and Kobos in odd little spots here and there around the country today and I'm DAMNED EXCITED, I can tell you. For those who prefer the physical artefact (I'm with you there, I still like my print books more), the print version will be released around Aust/NZ on 1 May - and I can't wait!!!

Sorry, I'm not being literal. I have a reason for being so salacious. My very sexy (verging on pornographic) story titled 'Banquet' will be published alongside four other sexy, savvy authors in Secret Cravings 'Edible Delights Anthology Vol 2'.

I'm reblogging this not because I'm lazy (although that is one of my failings). I'm reblogging because today is my official debut as an author and my first official appearance as an author will be at the very exciting Australian Romance Readers Conference in Brisbane in March - so I couldn't say it any better than it's said here. And there'll be plenty of new stuff in all the Pillow Talk blog posts as I travel around cyber-land getting to know new readers.

I’ve always loved the cosiness of a post-coital chat. There’s something eternally satisfying about the relaxed intimacy of sharing a pillow and some sweet secrets with your beloved after you’ve given the bed a good shake and woken the neighbours.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t realise the pun of this blog title until I’d formulated its content. The Next Big Thing is hopping around author blogs at the moment and I’ve been tagged by the incomparable Maggie Nash to post this week, and have failed the task dismally.

To be honest I was dubious about reading this book, having never delved into the kinky world of BDSM before (other than the prerequisite 50 Shades, which - in truth - hardly rates worthy). By the time I'd hit the fourth chapter I was very pleasantly surprised and eager to return each time I had to put it down.

“When you need escape, when you need that rough lover to bring you to your knees, here you will find stories to singe your fingers. The taste of adventure, the tang of BDSM, the burn of fantasy run wild. Brace yourselves, if you dare to read.”

Submission is one of the biggest sexual turn-on’s for us humans. There’s something about giving up control and anticipating when and how we might be touched that creates a mind-blowingly slow erotic burn. So it’s no surprise this little gem of a short book has done so well since its release on 2 November.
