To celebrate the anniversary of the release of Being Jade, and my upcoming writers panels - F Word: Romance @ The Wheeler Centre and Risky Fictions @ Bendigo Writers Festival - I thought I'd republish a Q&A I did for The Hoopla. Some good meaty bits to chew on here - including all the big ticket items - love, truth, infidelity and intimacy. Oh, and art!

Being Jade, my second novel, has been out for 2 months and the reviews are nothing short of stunning. I'm still pinching myself that Being Jade has been so well received. Even people who hate it are giving it a good rating because it made them feel so much, which is, I believe, what a good book should do.

Launching a book is a bit like christening a baby. It’s a welcome to the world, a blessing, a celebration, an expression of gratitude from the author to the community of people who supported the birth of the book. I am told by my many author friends that a launch is as essential to the release of a new book as a family gathering is essential to the welcoming of a new family member.

With 'Saint' contracted and a deadline looming, I now had no choice but to keep writing. But... Banjo was dead. Jade was comatose. And I had no idea who Lissy was. Or why I’d chosen to write this particular story. The bar I'd set for myself seemed insurmountable. I felt like I was on a one way path to literary oblivion. Then art therapy arrived...

To celebrate the upcoming release of Being Jade, I'm talking each week about how the novel came together and the challenges I faced in writing it. This week, my first of many crises: character names and the original title of the novel, Saint.

Being Jade, for many reasons, is the most difficult piece of work I’ve ever written. It began as a challenge and over three years of writing, never changed. In the run up to its release, I thought it might be fun to share some of the ups and downs of my journey with this intriguing story, beginning with the character at its heart – Jade. This is what she looked like in her first draft.
