In spite of my recent discovery that social media is fairly pointless, I joined Instagram this week.
...whyilovemelbourne...(in case you’d like to join me.)
Am I wasting my time? Life is busy enough, without having to post about it all the time. How do you feel about social media?

Connectedness is the solution to all forms of cruelty. In the aftermath of recent news in Australia of the discovery of an abandoned baby and the subsequent crucifying of his mother for the cruelty of the act, I’ve been feeling heart heavy and reflective.

Every now and then something or someone stumbles across our path that changes us. At the time it feels like an accident, a random act of the universe. Looking back on these moments with hindsight, however, they begin to look more like destiny.

Does anyone else feel like the world is full of nasty joy sucking Dementors right now? Negativity and fear are contagious and in these days its at pandemic proportions. It would be nice to ignore, but we all know if you stick your head in the sand the end result is you’ll get your arse kicked. As an antidote, I'm following the advice of Professor Lupin and been eating a lot of chocolate. What do you do when faced with Dementors on every side?

I received a letter the other day from an older woman expressing her disappointment at the ‘explicit descriptions of sensual activities’ in my book, The Yearning. It was the second time that week my writing had been labelled ‘porn’. It saddened me because people lump all sex writing in one shameful basket. All sex writing isn't the same and I wish people would stop trying to make it so.

Being Jade, my second novel, has been out for 2 months and the reviews are nothing short of stunning. I'm still pinching myself that Being Jade has been so well received. Even people who hate it are giving it a good rating because it made them feel so much, which is, I believe, what a good book should do.

Launching a book is a bit like christening a baby. It’s a welcome to the world, a blessing, a celebration, an expression of gratitude from the author to the community of people who supported the birth of the book. I am told by my many author friends that a launch is as essential to the release of a new book as a family gathering is essential to the welcoming of a new family member.

Being Jade, for many reasons, is the most difficult piece of work I’ve ever written. It began as a challenge and over three years of writing, never changed.
In the run up to its release, I thought it might be fun to share some of the ups and downs of my journey with this intriguing story, beginning with the character at its heart – Jade. This is what she looked like in her first draft.

Do you remember your first ride on a roller coaster? The anticipation and stomach dropping descent? Being a first time author is just as exhilarating! And terrifying. As the release of my second novel, Being Jade, draws near, I'm reflecting on how my debut, The Yearning, fared, and the picture ain't too shabby. She's been nominated for Best Erotic Romance with the Australian Romance Readers Association (voting open now) and has made it to a few notable Top 10 Reads for 2013.

The idea of exchanging letters with a lover is endlessly romantic and I’m regretful it doesn't happen any more.

Being an author isn't always about getting the words down, although that is the most important part. Once the words are down and out in the wild, people like to talk to you about them, particularly if the words in question are a bit controversial.

Apologies for my absence. I've been frantic the last couple of weeks with finishing a rough draft of my second novel and attending the annual Romance Writers of Australia conference in Fremantle Perth. I have returned to the desk after a fortnight feeling somewhat dazed and confused because during my week in the West I fell in love with so much - music, art, words, people - I think I'm suffering in-love-brain-fry.

If, after last week’s post, you’re still undecided whether Edible Delights Vol 2 should find its way to your e-reader or not, this week’s Tasty Morsel might convince you. Five authors, five very different stories. A treasury of romantic, sexy, food themed tales is what Edible Delights Volume 2 is about.
